The BRMA now has social media!
We have created a Facebook page as the first step in engaging with a new type of audience. Many members might be thinking why do we need a Facebook page when we have some other forms of communication such as the website, mail drops, face to face clubs and gatherings?
A number of members felt that it was necessary to have a form of media that can engage and promote the BRMA as well as the hobby in general to the general public/non-members or even those members who would like to have a more interactive news cycle of the happenings and events within the organization that they can also share with other Facebook friends.
As you would see at face to face gatherings, the majority of our members would be classed in the senior age category. Having a social media page will allow us to engage with a younger audience and help bring in new blood who may not use traditional paper media.
We have already started utilising the page for the promotion of the BRMA Tasmanian Model Railway Show coming up in August. This has already been very successful, having reached over 8500 people with free advertising in a little over a month of promotion. The Facebook page has also been used to promote "The Clearing House" magazine and also remind people about the annual membership renewal.
If there is an event or occasion of interest in your local region you are encouraged to send the information through to the social media

Those who log on to the BRMA Facebook page will notice that they are unable to “post” their own content, but are able to comment and interact with and share existing content. The reason for this is that the Facebook page is a public noticeboard for the BRMA. There are already plenty of other Facebook groups for members to discuss their own model railways, ask technical questions, or have lively discussions on certain topics.
John Kalaitzis and Patrick Smith have stepped up to run the Facebook page, but we are looking for a member from each State/Region to also become an administrator to assist in uploading content letting people know what is happening in their local area.
