View of Matlock station on the upper level. The car park tops an interesting palisade on the lower level leading to a cutting and tunnel under the Heights of Abraham in the distance. A mirror reflects the scene.
The Lafarge Cement Works loads wagons hauled by a Type 66 diesel in DB Schenker livery. The bridge spans the confluence of the two main lines and turn outs to the Freight Yard.
Another view of the bridges carrying the passenger and freight services on the upper level.
Busy station view with 5-car Pendolino in platform 1, and a Type 73 main line diesel electric departing from platform 3. A Type 170 DMU waits in the carriage siding for its turn to run a service to Cavemouth.
A view of the actual carved sandstone cutting at the apex of the branchline to Cavemouth. From this point the line traverses a narrow bridge, crosses the freight yard and has a 1 in 100 descent to the terminus.
This view shows how the branchline exits the cave behind a pillar of sandstone, before crossing the freight yard. The support for the 30 meter long branchline is on 5 cm Foam supported on steel pegs hammered into the rock.
